More and more organisations are waking up to the term 'onboarding' and it's benefits if done well.
Onboarding is a term mainly used in the United States, and refers to the whole process between offering someone a job with the organisation right through to the end of the first 3-6 months of employment.
Research has shown that by having slick, employee focused processes, onboarding can pay dividends in terms of employee satisfaction and hence retention rates.
According to research by the Aberdeen Group, around 8% of employees will decide on their first day with a new organisation whether they are likely to stay or not, with 35% deciding within the first 3 months, and another 30% within the first 6 months.
It is therefore cost effective for employers to make an investment in the onboarding process to ensure the new employee feels valued before they even start.
Key points are:
By ensuring the onboarding process is as smooth as possible the employee should become productive in their role quickly and be left with a lasting impression that they work for an efficient and caring employer.
