The following is a summary of the above article reported in the People Management magazine which reports mainly on the research findings entitled 'Facing up to the Future' from Orion Partners. This research indicates that under the Shared Services/Business Partner/Centres of Expertise HR model, junior HR professionals are finding themselves trapped in service centre roles with no clear career structure to other HR roles.
The jump from an advisory role to Business Partner is not an easy transition to make in many cases. Some HR professionals are having to move to smaller organisations in order to gain the breadth of experience they require.
Transact HR comment:
This is a fundamental issue that HR must address in order to ensure the continued success of the HR transformational model in the future.
Whilst HR staff in SSC roles gain an insight into most areas of the business, and get to interact with managers, other initiatives must be put in place to ensure career development paths are available.
Such initiatives may include:
Mentoring, Job Shadowing with Business Partners & Specialists, involvement with special business projects.
Transact HR actively promote and support such initiatives.
