SPC charts are used for historical analysis to understand how the process has been behaving. More importantly they are used once a process has been improved on an on-going basis to check that process improvement does not deteriorate again, as they provide a clear indication of when a process has or has not changed. They provide real time analysis of the process performance that aims to detect and react to process changes. There are several versions of these charts and the correct one to use is dependant upon the type of data you are dealing with.
In summary SPC charts can help detect:
A change in process average.
A change in process variation.
One off events (special causes).
